San Francisco turns to AI to save whales from ship strikes as deaths soar
San Francisco Bay has launched WhaleSpotter, an AI detection network that scans for whale blows and heat signatures up to 2 nautical miles away. The system is meant to warn mariners to slow down or reroute after ship strikes contributed to 40% of 21 grey whale deaths in the area.
