San Francisco Bay has launched WhaleSpotter, an AI detection network that scans for whale blows and heat signatures up to 2 nautical miles away. The system is meant to warn mariners to slow down or reroute after ship strikes contributed to 40% of 21 grey whale deaths in the area.
