AI is inflating student grades, and the effect points to outsourced work, not better learning
A UC Berkeley study of more than 500,000 grades found that courses with substantial writing and coding work saw grade increases after ChatGPT launched. The pattern was strongest in homework, suggesting AI use may be substituting for student work rather than improving learning.
